Fast Forward | The Future is Queer

July 30 through August 27, 2022
Opening Reception: Saturday, July 30, 6-9 pm

The fifth and final part of Bermudez Projects’ groundbreaking series FAST FORWARD is finally here!

The first four exhibits in the series broke down artists by race, gender, and sexuality. But FAST FORWARD | The Future Is Equal, which opens July 30 says “Fuck that shit!” and presents 50 artists of all stripes representing the past, present, and future of art.

From the outset, FAST FORWARD aimed to present an array of artists from various disciplines working in varying media to highlight the recurring themes that artists have always taken on, generation after generation: racial and gender inequality, body politics, sexuality, imperialism, migration, social justice, identity, and the lack of inclusion within mainstream art and culture. Says gallery owner Julian Bermudez, “I want everyone to see these artists’ works through an expanded lens … that of pure appreciation regardless of their age, race, cultural identity, or gender.”

So, The Future is Equal will include fan favorites from the previous shows, like the Louise Nevelson 1969 sculpture Night Leaf from The Future is Female; Frank Romero’s iconic work, The Closing of Whittier Boulevard from The Future Is Brown; Delano Dunn’s breathtaking Afrofuturistic mixed-media work, (Superposition) from The Future Is Black; and Keith Haring’s 1986 limited-edition silkscreen Untitled (from the Bad Boys portfolio).

But, the exhibit is also taking the opportunity to bring in works by artists who were not part of the previous iterations, including:

  • A 2019 Naoshima Pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama, the prominent avant-garde artist known for her Infinity Dots, Infinity Rooms, polka dots, and pumpkins. Kusama continues exploring her own obsessive-compulsive disorder, sexuality, freedom, and perception to this day.
  • The debut of award-winning photographer Gil Garcetti’s photos of LA’s reimagined 6th Street Bridge at night.
  • Tony Delap’s Untitled (Black Triangle) from 2007, an intimate acrylic-on-canvas painting encapsulating the artist’s ethos. A pioneer of West Coast Minimalism and Op Art, Delap’s works challenge perceptions with their teasing, shifting shapes, form, and sense of depth.
  • Boyle Heights-native street artist Alex “DEFER” Kizu’s black-and-white silkscreen, Los Angeles, which captures the artist’s mastery of rendering beautifully complex letter-form.
  • And, a throwback to one of the gallery’s biggest hit shows at its first location at 9th and Broadway, David Weidman’s 1960’s Modernist silkscreen prints. Weidman’s body of work conveys a vintage modernism complete with striking color-style, graphic sensibility, and expert use of saturated colors.

“The future of art is happening in front of our very eyes,” adds Bermudez. “And, each show from this series has been setting things up for this grand finale. I guarantee you’ll be wowed.”
